There are several misconceptions and myths about dentistry, and many of these originate from a time when dentistry was much different. While dental services used to be more uncomfortable, advancements in the field have made for quicker, painless treatments.
The term “root canal” can strike fear into the hearts of many, but this treatment is actually a necessary procedure that can save your tooth and reduce painful symptoms.
At Broadway Dental of Pearland, Dr. Allouch is a Kois-trained dentist who provides root canals and other restorative dentistry services. With a root canal, you can experience a more comfortable smile and avoid tooth loss.

When Is a Root Canal Necessary?
A root canal is a procedure that treats infections in the tooth pulp, which is the inner layer of the tooth. Root canals are very common, and while they may sound upsetting, they are actually rather quick and simple treatments.
When you have a deep cavity or a damaged tooth that becomes infected, a root canal removes the bacteria in the pulp. The process involves creating a small hole in the tooth and then removing the infected pulp.
After removing the infection, a dental material called gutta-percha is injected into the cavity to prevent further infection.
Signs You May Need a Root Canal
Setting up an appointment is the quickest way to know if you need a root canal. However, you can also pay attention to the following symptoms:
- Persistent tooth pain
- Increased sensitivity to pressure and temperature
- Swollen gums or jaw
- Discoloration or darkening of a tooth
- Pimples or boils on your gums
If you notice any of these symptoms, it is crucial to set up a dental appointment. These symptoms can impact your health and quality of life. If you do have a tooth infection, you shouldn’t wait to get treatment.
Increased Comfort with Sedation Dentistry
When you have a root canal, you’ll receive local anesthesia to ensure you are comfortable during the process. Along with anesthesia, we also offer sedation dentistry options for patients who struggle with dental anxiety or discomfort.
With sedation dentistry, you can feel even more relaxed during your treatments, which is especially useful for patients who have dental anxieties.
We offer two kinds of sedation dentistry: nitrous oxide and oral conscious sedation.
Nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas, is administered through a mask. As the gas is inhaled, you will begin to feel more relaxed. Once the gas is turned off, you’ll quickly return to your unsedated condition.
For patients with more extreme anxiety, oral sedation—administered through a pill—provides deeper relaxation but still allows you to remain conscious during the procedure.
